How to Test a TV in a Shop in Two Minutes
Showroom lighting and demo mode hide more than they show. Here's a fast, realistic checklist you can actually run on the shop floor.
Showroom TVs are set up to look as impressive as possible under bright fluorescent lighting — punchy, oversaturated, motion-smoothed to within an inch of its life. None of that tells you how the TV will actually look in your living room. Here's what to check instead, and it only takes a couple of minutes.
First, ask staff to get out of "vivid" or "demo" mode
Most showroom TVs run a "Vivid" or "Dynamic" picture mode specifically to stand out under store lighting — oversaturated colour, boosted sharpness, and aggressive motion interpolation. This is not representative of how the TV will look at home. Ask for it to be switched to "Standard," "Movie," or "Cinema" mode before judging anything.
Then run through this
- Load this site on your phone and open black screen. Hold your phone next to the TV, or better, load white-screen.io directly on the TV's browser if it has one. Fullscreen black in a shop is imperfect (you can't dim showroom lighting), but corner brightness and obvious backlight bleed are still visible even under bright lights on most panels.
- Look for uniformity on grey, not just black — the uniformity test is more forgiving of ambient light than a black-field test and will still show clouding.
- Check the gradient test for banding. A smooth black-to-white ramp (the gradient test) reveals visible colour banding — steps instead of a smooth transition — much faster than any real content will.
- Watch a dark scene, not a bright demo reel. If the shop has streaming apps, pull up any movie with a night scene rather than the default demo loop. Dark scene performance is where cheaper panels fall apart, and demo reels are chosen specifically to avoid showing that.
- Check the viewing angle, especially if it's VA-panel-based (common on budget/mid-range TVs) — walk to the side and watch how much contrast is lost off-axis, since your living room seating probably isn't dead-center.
What actually predicts home performance
Uniformity and black-level behaviour transfer over from a showroom fairly reliably. Colour and "pop" mostly don't — showroom lighting and picture mode changes those so much that judging them in-store is close to meaningless. Focus your two minutes on the things that don't lie.
