White Screen for Phone

Auto-brightness will fight you. Most phones adjust display brightness in response to how much light the camera-side ambient sensor sees — pointing your phone at a bright white screen can trigger it to dim automatically, which looks like a fault but isn’t one. Turn off auto-brightness in your phone’s display settings before testing for genuine defects.

iPhone/iPad: turn off True Tone first. True Tone shifts white warmer to match ambient lighting, which will make a “check if the white is really white” test misleading. Settings → Display & Brightness → True Tone, off. See our full guide to warm-tinted screens if this is why you’re here.

The notch, camera cutout, or Dynamic Island. Fullscreen mode in mobile browsers generally does extend the coloured field behind these cutouts on OLED phones (since there’s no backlight to hide, unlike LCD), but Safari and Chrome handle the safe-area differently — if you see a black bar near a cutout, try rotating to landscape, which usually clears it.

As an improvised light. A phone screen at full brightness in white is a genuinely useful last-resort light for reading in the dark or finding something dropped under furniture — the fullscreen mode here removes the status bar and any UI that would otherwise leak light-blocking black bars at the edges.
