Reading a Uniformity Test Honestly
Every panel has some unevenness. Here's how to tell normal manufacturing variance from something actually worth acting on.
It's tempting to fill your screen with grey, stare hard, and convince yourself of a problem — uniformity is one of those tests where looking for a defect makes you find one, whether it's really there or not. A little discipline makes the test actually useful.
Set it up properly first
- Use mid-grey, not white or black — clouding and tint drift are far more visible on grey.
- Sit at a normal viewing distance, not with your face six inches from the panel.
- Use normal room lighting, not a pitch-dark room — you're checking for something that would bother you in real use, not the theoretical limit of what's detectable.
- Go fullscreen. Browser chrome and a taskbar break up the field and make judging evenness harder.
What's normal
Almost every LCD panel has some brightness variation across its surface — often 5–10% between the brightest and dimmest areas is considered acceptable, even on panels marketed as "uniform." A very slight warm or cool tint in one corner that you have to hunt for is common and not a fault. VA panels in particular often show mild clouding on grey that's invisible during normal (non-solid-colour) use.
What's worth acting on
A patch that's obviously, immediately visible without hunting for it — a distinctly warmer or cooler region you'd notice while just using the computer, or a clear boundary line where brightness changes — is a legitimate defect. If you can point to it in under two seconds without already having primed yourself to look for a problem, it's real.
The test that matters more than this one
If uniformity looks borderline, the more useful question is whether it's visible during normal use — a photo editing session, a dark movie scene, a spreadsheet. A flat grey field is a magnifying glass; real content is much more forgiving. Use this test to confirm a suspicion you already had from actual use, not to go looking for problems that won't matter day to day.
