Before you clean
- Turn off the display, or at minimum lock the device, before physically wiping it — a static solid field makes dust and smears easier to see, but you should clean with the screen off.
- Use a dry microfiber cloth first. Most day-to-day marks come off without any liquid at all.
- If you need liquid, use distilled water or a cleaner made for displays — never ammonia or alcohol-based glass cleaner. Modern screens have an anti-glare/oleophobic coating that harsh chemicals can strip.
- Spray the cloth, not the screen — liquid should never be applied directly to the panel.
- Wipe gently in one direction rather than scrubbing in circles, and never press hard on an LCD panel.
Once you’re done, use the black screen or white screen tool again on a powered-on display to confirm the smudges and dust are actually gone.
